No fewer than 13 individuals perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
